Insights, Questions, Myths and Misconceptions

Get answers to the questions that are often overlooked when considering solar energy for your home.

100% Efficiency; Not Grid Tied

Panels are always 100% efficient
On clear, sunny days, solar panels are 100% efficiency; on cloudy days: 50-80% efficient; on heavy overcast days: 10-25% efficient. Solar panels can work efficiently in cold environments and can perform well enough in cooler temperatures. On the other hand, extreme heat can slightly reduce their efficiency.

System is not Tied to the Utility Grid
Most residential solar systems are still connected to the grid. This means that during power outages, your system will not provide electricity unless you have battery storage.

Can I be completely off-grid with solar energy?

You can, but it requires a larger system and battery storage to ensure consistent power supply, especially during low sunlight periods.

Is the Long-term Investment Worthwhile?

Are you ready for the long-term commitment?
Since solar panels typically last 25-30 years,  realize they are yours for the time being, unless or until you sell your house.

Are you ready to make your roof suitable?
Consider the cost of potential roof repairs or replacement.

Is your energy usage sufficient to make it worthwhile?
Solar might not be cost-effective if your consumption is low. Most typically, it can make sense if your energy bill is $100 or more.

Solar is a good investment, even if I sell the house a few years later
This is not always true because:

  • the potential increase in home value and short-term energy savings could outweigh the initial installation costs.
  • the added value may decrease as the system ages, depending on when you move.
  • the solar loan or lease may have terms that affect the sale of your home.
Maintenance; Insurance; Buyer Pool

Maintenance is Required
Solar panels require a minimal leve of care, with occasional cleaning. It is wise to do inspections often enough.

Insurance Premium Increase
Solar panels might increase your home insurance premiums.

Limiting Your Buyer Pool
Even though solar can typically increase home value, it may also limit your buyer pool when selling.

Environmental Impact

Carbon Footprint
Solar panels take about 2-3 years to become carbon neutral. Also, they have impact from the production and transportation aspects.

End-of-Life Disposal
Although solar panels are said to recyclable, not all components of the panels are easily recycled.
